56 participating artists, duos and collectives revealed for 2026 Whitney Biennial – The Art Newspaper

The Whitney Museum of American Artwork has revealed the 56 artists, duos and collectives that can take part within the 2026 Whitney Biennial, the 82nd version of probably the most closely-watched recurring exhibition of latest artwork in the USA. The checklist of members consists of some names that shall be acquainted to many on the worldwide artwork circuit—just like the conceptual artist Andrea Fraser, the abstractionist Kamrooz Aram, the multihyphenate artist and poet Treasured Okoyomon, the efficiency artist Pat Oleszko and the comic and former Saturday Night time Life author Julio Torres—and plenty of extra that is probably not (full checklist beneath).

The exhibition’s co-curators, Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer (a curator and curator of images, respectively, on the Whitney), have opted to forego a thematic title for his or her exhibition (the final two Whitney Biennials had titles) and “let our conversations with artists information us”, Sawyer stated in a press release.

“After greater than 300 visits, we discovered that most of the artists we gravitated towards have been exploring numerous types of relationality with a selected emphasis on infrastructures,” Sawyer added. “Along with artists from throughout 25 states, we additionally invited artists from Afghanistan, Chile, Iraq, Okinawa, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Vietnam and elsewhere—locations marked by the attain of US energy. Collectively, these artists’ work make area for types of relation which are intimate, improvised and contested.”

The exhibition, which opens 8 March 2026, will occupy many of the Whitney’s constructing in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District and embody a full programme of performances, public occasions and on-line programming. Guerrero added in a press release: “With this Biennial, we hope to foreground a community of kinships that gesture towards types of coexisting on this world.”

Along with some well-established figures and a slew of rising artists, subsequent 12 months’s Whitney Biennial will embody works by a variety of historic or ignored figures, amongst them the painter, creator and poet Carmen de Monteflores (who can be Andrea Fraser’s mom), the Filipino composer José Maceda (1917-2004) and the photographer Kimowan Metchewais (1963-2011), who was a member of the Cree and Chilly Lake First Nations of Canada.

The Whitney Biennial may even kick off a busy 12 months for the worldwide calendar of -ennials that features the Biennale of Sydney (14 March-14 June), MoMA PS1’s newest quinquennial survey of the native artwork scene Higher New York (16 April-18 August), the Venice Biennale (9 Might-22 November), Manifesta 16 (21 June-4 October), the Biennale de Lyon (19 September-December), the Toronto Biennial of Artwork (26 September-20 December) and the Gwangju Biennale (September-November).
