Tropical Storm Chantal is forecast to convey heavy rains because it strikes inland throughout northeastern South Carolina on Sunday.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for parts of the 2 Carolinas, the Nationwide Hurricane Middle in Miami stated.

The storm was about 70 miles (112 kilometers) east of Charleston, South Carolina, early Sunday, and 85 miles (136 kilometers) southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. Its most sustained winds have been clocked at 50 mph (80 kph), and it was transferring north at 8 mph (13 kph).

Rain bands from Chantal have been transferring onshore, the hurricane middle stated, with flash floods an growing concern.

Heavy rain was forecast for elements of North Carolina by Monday, with complete rainfall of two to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) and native quantities as much as 6 inches (15 centimeters) that would result in flash flooding.

South Carolina’s Emergency Administration division had warned residents earlier of the opportunity of remoted tornadoes alongside the coast and of minor coastal flooding.

It additionally warned drivers to not enterprise on water-covered roads or round road-closure indicators the place flooding occurred.
