New York non-profit Art in General, shuttered since 2020, stages a comeback – The Art Newspaper

The unbiased house Artwork in Normal is returning to New York Metropolis after a five-year hiatus. For the primary time since shuttering its bodily location throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Artwork in Normal is again with a pop-up exhibition at Yve Yang Gallery in Soho, opening 22 August.

The reincarnated non-profit additionally has a brand new director: Xiaoyu Weng, a New York-based curator and author, who concurrently serves because the inventive director of the Tanoto Artwork Basis in Singapore. Artwork in Normal was based in 1981 by the artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka. The late curator Holly Block (1958-2017) was director there for 18 years; she left to go the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2006.

Over time, Artwork in Normal confirmed the work of greater than 2,000 artists—together with Pfeiffer, Marina Abramović, Francis Alys, Sanford Biggers, Tania Bruguera, Pierre Huyghe, Joan Jonas, Glenn Ligon, Pope.L, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotti Rist, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Kay WalkingStick.

Artwork in Normal occupied 79 Walker Avenue in Tribeca for 35 years. It moved to the Dumbo neighbourhoood of Brooklyn in 2016. When it closed 4 years later, the non-profit was mourned as a serious loss for the native artwork neighborhood.

The upcoming pop-up exhibition, curated by Qingyuan Deng, will embrace works by the artists Lee Bul, Josh Kline, Agnieszka Kurant, Heidi Lau, Davina Semo, Wong Ping and Xaviera Simmons, amongst others. The exhibition is accompanied by an public sale of the works on view to boost cash for the non-profit. A reception will happen on 28 August at Yve Yang Gallery, just some blocks away from Artwork in Normal’s unique location.
